Check the antifreeze
Antifreeze has excellent properties such as antifreeze in winter, anti-boiling in summer, and year-round scale and corrosion prevention. Like a car, the use and maintenance of a yacht in winter begins with checking the antifreeze. When the temperature approaches 0℃, injecting antifreeze mixture into the cooling pipe allows the water-containing device to effectively avoid freezing. It is worth noting that the cooling circuit should be cleaned before injecting antifreeze.
However, when the outside temperature drops below 0℃, the water in the pipes may still freeze and cause the pipes to burst. Therefore, it is still very necessary to frequently check all water-containing systems and equipment, including seawater systems and freshwater systems, such as the engine cooling system, generator cooling system, freshwater pump, wipers, etc.
Ensure fuel fluidity
At low temperatures, diesel fuel can produce solid, wax-like suspended particles, which can clog the oil filter and prevent the engine from working properly. Therefore, in winter, you should consider using diesel fuel suitable for local climate conditions to ensure fuel fluidity. Generally, 0# light diesel fuel is suitable for all parts of the country from April to September; in areas south of the Great Wall, 10# light diesel fuel should be used in winter.
Other precautions
1. Before winter, allow freshwater to flow into the seawater circuit for the engine and generator, check the sacrificial anodes for electrochemical corrosion, remove accumulated salt, and apply a protective coating. Check the oil and fuel filters and replace them if necessary.
2. Before winter for the air conditioning, pump freshwater into the seawater system. After winter, check the antifreeze ratio in the freshwater circuit: add or replace as necessary, at least every two seasons. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for specific maintenance.
3. After cleaning the water tank with disinfectant, drain the freshwater circuit.
4. Lift the yacht to a dry, sheltered place. If the yacht is moored outdoors, cover it with a waterproof layer and ensure good ventilation.
5. Disconnect all unnecessary power units.
