Dalian Shipyard: Types of Common Cargo Vessels
Dalian Shipyard explains the common types of cargo vessels.
① Traditional liner. This type of vessel provides regular transport services, usually carrying small or less-than-container-load (LCL) cargo. Cargo is loaded and unloaded using the ship's derrick or crane, and cargo stowage is done manually on board.
② Semi-container or semi-pallet vessel. This type of vessel carries break-bulk cargo and cargo on pre-loaded containers or pallets, relying on forklifts for stowage. Containers can also be loaded on open holds or decks.
③ Full container vessel. It is a vessel built specifically for loading containers. It uses its own loading and unloading equipment or uses shore cranes to load and unload containers. Different types of container vessels are roughly divided into several "generations": Vessels with a container capacity of 600-1000 TEU are considered first-generation container vessels; those with a capacity of 1100-1800 TEU are second-generation; and those capable of carrying 2000-3000 TEU are third-generation. Third-generation container vessels are Panama-max vessels, wide enough to transit the Panama Canal. Fourth-generation and larger vessels are wider and cannot transit the Panama Canal.
