Dalian Shipyard: Types of Common Cargo Vessels
Dalian Shipyard explains the common types of cargo vessels.
①Traditional liner. This type of vessel provides regular transport services, usually carrying small or scattered cargo. Cargo is loaded and unloaded using the ship's derrick or crane, and cargo stowage is done manually on board.
②Semi-container or semi-pallet vessel. This type of vessel carries bulk cargo and cargo on pre-loaded containers or pallets, relying on forklifts for stowage. Containers can also be loaded on open holds or decks.
③Full container vessel. This is a vessel built specifically for loading containers. It uses its own loading and unloading equipment or uses shore cranes to load and unload containers. Different types of container ships are roughly divided into several "generations": Vessels with a container capacity of 600TEU~1000TEU are considered first-generation container ships; those with a capacity of 1100TEU~1800TEU are second-generation container ships; those capable of carrying 2000TEU~3000TEU are third-generation container ships. Third-generation container ships are Panama-type vessels whose width allows them to pass through the Panama Canal. Fourth-generation and larger container ships have a greater width and are unsuitable for transit through the Panama Canal.
